Glutamine is an amino acid, a building block of protein that is the most abundant amino acidsin the body. It is a precursor to glutathione, which is the body’s most powerful antioxidant. Most glutamine can be found in the muscles and in the lungs, where it is produced. One of its most important roles is to remove ammonia from the body. It can help the body when it is stressed, strengthen the immune system, and it is needed for brain function and digestion.
When the body is stressed from heavy exercise, an injury, or even surgery, it releases cortisol in the bloodstream, which lowers the glutamine present in the body. Glutamine is essential for recovery because it produces nitrogen, which is necessary to repair wounds and helps keep vital organs functioning properly. Athletes can sometimes reduce the amount their bodies produce after heavy exercise or training, causing them to catch a cold. This is because of the role that glutamine plays in the immune system. Replacing what was lost during heavy exercise can result in fewer infections. People with HIV/AIDS can even experience muscle wasting, due to using up more Glutamine than their bodies can produce.
Our bodies usually produce enough glutamine for our needs. We can also get it naturally from animal protein like grass fed beef, pork, chicken, free range eggs, and milk. These are also great sources of protein which is also necessary for healing damaged tissues. Vegetarians and omnivores alike can also find glutamine in raw vegetables like spinach, cabbage and parsley. Certain medical conditions can lower glutamine in the body, and in this case a supplement would be helpful. Supplements come in powder, capsule or liquid form and should be taken with cold or room temperature water. Glutamine is heat sensitive and can be destroyed when added to hot beverages. The standard dosage for an adult is 500mg 1-3 times a day. Higher doses may be prescribed by a doctor in certain conditions.
