Daily Dose of Goji Berry: 10-30g of dried fruit
The goji berry is also known as the wolfberry and is grown in the north-central and western areas of China. The berry is a bright orange-red or blue-red color and can be easily damaged while picking so they are usually dried before they are exported to keep them preserved. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it has been used to manage diabetes, high blood pressure, fever, age-related eye problems, and fatigue. Most berries that are blue or red have natural antioxidants which protect the body from oxidative damage. Research has found that taking goji berries in standardized doses for a month helped increase levels of antioxidant liver enzymes, and reducing cell damage in the blood by almost 10%. These berries may also benefit the immune system and reduce fatigue because they contain complex starches called Lycium barbarum polysaccharides. A study conducted in “Optometry and Vision Science” says that taking goji berry supplements daily for a a period of 90 days significantly helps the prevention of soft drusen accumulation. This is an early warning sign of age-related macular degeneration. The reason for this is still unclear although it could be because it is rich in vitamin A, which also has many benefits to the skin, immune system, and vision. Another possible reason is that it has Taurine, which is beneficial in slowing the development of eye conditions related to diabetes.
Goji berries are generally safe to eat in moderation. Reported side effects include nausea and vomiting. It may interact with some drugs such as warfarin, which is a blood thinner. It may also interact with blood pressure drugs and diabetes drugs, so it’s best to ask a doctor first before taking them. There is no standard dose but according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, 150g daily of fresh fruit can be used. For dried fruit 10-30g per day is recommended. If your goji berries are in capsule form, 2500mg can be taken per day.
