Hawthorn Berry comes from a thorny shrub that is from the rose family. The leaves, berries, and flowers have been used in medicine to treat heart problems since as early as the 1st century. Angina, or chest pains, associated with congestive heart failure (CHF) is just one of the health problems that hawthorn can treat. Studies have proven that hawthorn may improve CHF symptoms like fatigue and shortness of breath. Hawthorn extract has shown significant hypotensive effects in patients that have high blood pressure. One way it helps lower blood pressure is through dilation of the blood vessels because of flavonoids and oligomeric procyanidins. When the blood vessels dilate, circulation often improves and it can lessen the amount of pressure in the arteries. This will result in a decrease in stress on the heart and a reduction in the risk of heart failure, heart attack, and stroke. Hawthorn can get rid of the plaque that forms along the arterial walls, making the blood vessels narrow. The flavonoids in this berry can prevent the plaque from forming and reduce the amount of LDL, or bad cholesterol, in the blood stream. Less plaque eventually leads to lower blood pressure. Other uses of hawthorn berry include treating digestive system problems such as diarrhea and indigestion, treating menstrual problems, as a sedative, treating tapeworm, and for skin problems like boils, sores, and ulcers.
If you are considering using hawthorn berry as an herbal supplement, talk to your doctor first. Since it is used to treat heart problems, negative side effects may occur in people who do not need it. It can treat palpitations but a high dose can actually increase palpitations. Other side effect involving the heart are increased chest pain and fatigue during activity. Other known side effects are nausea, dizziness, and intestinal hemorrhaging. The safe recommended daily dose for reducing symptoms of CHF ranges from 160mg to 900mg of a supplement containing 18 percent to 20 percent oligomeric procyanidins, or 2 percent to 3 percent flavonoids.
