Daily Dose of Turmeric: 1000-2000mg
Turmeric is generally known as a spice as it is the principle spice in curry. Other than for cooking, turmeric can also be used for medicinal purposes. In India and in elsewhere in Asia, the root of turmeric has been used for thousands of years to treat digestive and liver problems, as well as to heal sores because it is said to be antimicrobial. A fresh juice is used topically for skin conditions such as eczema, chicken pox, shingles, allergies, and scabies. Now, turmeric is also used to treat inflammation. It is used to treat symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, like pain and swelling. Turmeric is a digestive aid because it contains curcumin, which can help stimulate the gallbladder to produce more bile. More bile from the gallbladder can be very beneficial to many digestive problems including gas, bloating, dyspepsia, and even inflammatory bowel disease. However, it should not be used to treat stomach ulcers because it increases stomach acid levels. Some research shows that turmeric can also help reduce blood cholesterol and prevent LDL (low density lipoprotein) from accumulating in the arteries. Lower LDL levels can reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes. The antioxidant properties of curcumin may help stop or at least slow down the growth of cancer cells. This is done by hindering the blood vessels that supply the cancer cells.
Some risks involving turmeric can happen when taken in excessive doses or for extended periods. These include liver toxicity and upset stomach. It is also known to lower blood pressure so diabetics should take extra care when taking it. Turmeric may interact with blood thinners such as aspirin and warfarin. It is always best to consult a physician before taking any supplements to avoid unwanted side effects and health risks. The recommended dosage for an upset stomach is 500mg taken four times a day. For treating symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, the recommended dosage is 500mg twice a day.
